Caravaca promotes rural tourism at FITUR 2026
Cycling, hiking, the country air and gastronomy combine to make Caravaca a wonderful place to enjoy the great outdoors
Every 7 years the city of Caravaca de la Cruz in north-west Murcia is one of the stars of the show at the huge FITUR Tourism Fair in Madrid due to the holding of its Holy Jubilee, a privilege granted by Pope John Paul II in 1998, but even in other years it is hard to ignore the attractions of Caravaca, as the promotional initiative’s on the Region of Murcia stand show.
The 2026 promotional events featured a strong emphasis on the wide range of rural tourism opportunities in the large municipality (858 square kilometres, much of it unspoilt countryside and mountains), underlining the commitment on the part of the Town Hall to sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism. There are numerous rural accommodation establishments, hiking routes a-plenty and also recommended (and signposted) cycling itineraries for all levels of proficiency on two wheels (for easier options, for example, see here and here).
In addition, of course, the local gastronomy is marked by production in the countryside, and great efforts have been made to promote local restaurants in Caravaca by the publication of recommended tapas meals – again, examples can be found here and here. In fact, at FITUR 2026 a joint presentation was made by Caravaca de la Cruz in conjunction with the municipalities of Bullas, Calasparra, Cehegín, Moratalla and Mula promoting the food and drink of north-western Murcia.
