Caravaca park welcomes a new monument to Santa Teresa de Jesús
A vindication of Gothic stone construction techniques in the Caravaca park of Mayrena
The new public park of Mayrena in Caravaca de la Cruz is now adorned with a stone construction named “La Primera Morada” in tribute to one of the leading lights in the history of the holy city, Santa Teresa de Jesús, who was responsible for the foundation of numerous religious institutions in the locality during the 16th century.
The monument is an experimental structure which is based on the main principles of Gothic architecture in Europe, and students from France and Germany as well as all over Spain have taken part in its design and construction. The result is a kind of Gothic vault structure which vindicates the sustainability of using natural stone as a construction material.
The pieces of stone used were cut at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid with the help of students from Les Compagnons du Devoir in France, while the actual building was in the hands of the Stonemasonry School of Munich. It will now remain as a permanent fixture in the new park close to the entry to the Las Fuentes del Marqués beauty spot.
