Caravaca de la Cruz is opening its swimming pools early for the second year running
A packed summer sports programme is also on the way with activities for all ages and a range of free outdoor sessions
Caravaca de la Cruz is getting its swimming season under way earlier than usual this year, with the municipal pools in the town centre and the village of Archivel opening this Saturday June 6.
It's the second year in a row the council has brought the opening forward, a response to the increasingly warm temperatures that have been arriving earlier in June and hanging around longer into September. The pools are expected to stay open until the first week of September, adding around two extra weeks to the usual season at both ends.
Prices are staying put, which is welcome news for regular visitors. The same rates that have been in place since 2014 will apply again this summer, with season pass options available for large families, under-14s, senior citizens and organised groups.
Alongside the pools, the Department of Sports has put together a varied programme of summer activities designed to keep people of all ages moving.
Swimming lessons are back with a new format this year, running Monday to Thursday over three-week blocks, with 600 places spread across the pools in Caravaca, Archivel, Barranda and La Encarnación. Large families get a 20% discount on registration and free pool entry from Monday to Wednesday throughout the course. The swimming course programme has been running continuously since the 1980s.
For younger children, the popular Summiércoles programme returns for boys and girls aged 8 to 12, offering six excursions between June and July that mix sports, nature and leisure. Planned trips include Terra Mítica, MiniHollywood, Aquavera, an ice skating day in Elche, Dinopark and Les Fonts d'Algar, and a surf course in Puerto de Mazarrón. Places can be booked from June 5 through the Sporttia online platform.
Primary schools across the area will also get a send-off before the summer holidays through the “My School at the Pool” initiative, which brings the school year to a close with a day at the pools combining swimming and recreational activities.
Adults are well catered for too. The By the Light of the Moon night hiking series returns on June 27 with a full moon climb to Revolcadores from Los Odres, and a brand new free campaign called Feel Good runs from June 10 to 19, offering outdoor sessions of Pilates, fitness, hiking and exercise for seniors across various public spaces in the town including Ciudad Jardín, the bandstand, the municipal pool and García Esteller Park.
No registration is needed and the sessions will also be taken out to the outlying districts, where free guided sessions are already running.
