Cadiz coast under pressure as summer crowds stretch services
Roads, parking and public services are struggling to cope with the huge seasonal rise in population
For many people, summer on the Cádiz coast means busy beaches, lively resorts and a welcome boost for local businesses. But this year's crowds are once again exposing the pressure that comes with the huge seasonal increase in population.From motorway queues to shortages of parking, cleaning and police resources, residents and local councils across the province are calling for more support as coastal towns struggle to cope with the demands of July and August.
The scale of the problem is particularly clear on the Northwest Coast. Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Rota and Chipiona have a combined population of around 120,000, but that figure rises to more than 320,000 during the summer. Roads including the A-480 and A-2077 can become heavily congested, while demand for healthcare, cleaning, security and public transport also rises sharply.
Chipiona's mayor, Luis Mario Aparcero, recently called for additional government funding after the town's population rises from around 20,000 to approximately 200,000 in July and August.
"With 20,000 inhabitants, we cannot cover the expenses of 200,000," he said, calling for more resources for Policía Local and cleaning staff, as well as measures to deal with traffic.
The pressure isn't confined to local roads. The AP-4 saw traffic queues stretching for up to 20 kilometres on August 1, prompting the Junta de Andalucía to seek an urgent meeting with the Ministry of Transport and renew its call for a third lane between Seville and Cádiz.
Further north, Sanlúcar's Ayuntamiento has also called for the A-471 to be widened. The proposed project would cost around €160 million.
In Barbate, mayor Miguel Molina says the A-2231 near El Cañillo, on the way to Zahara de los Atunes, needs "urgent measures". The Ayuntamiento wants pedestrian crossings, traffic lights activated by pedestrians and roundabouts, or other measures to make crossing the busy road safer.
At Zahara, residents near Los Alemanes beach say an area designed for only a few hundred vehicles can see up to 3,000 cars at weekends. They have called for more police, cleaning and street lighting.
Meanwhile, Atlanterra's population reportedly rises from around 300 in winter to more than 10,000 in summer. Residents say infrastructure and public services have failed to keep pace with that growth.
Across the Cádiz coastline, the message is much the same: the summer crowds are bringing a welcome economic boost, but local infrastructure is struggling to keep up.
