Bouncing back: Jumilla swimming pool getting ready for summer, rebuilding after fire
Jumilla’s popular summer pool complex has undergone a €66,000 makeover after fire damage left fencing and trees destroyed
Jumilla’s open-air municipal summer swimming pools, located alongside Avenida de la Libertad (click here for map), are preparing to welcome visitors back for the busy season after major rebuilding work was completed following a fire at the sports complex.
Jumilla Town Council confirmed that reconstruction work has now finished at the La Hoya Municipal Sports Centre, where flames caused serious damage to the south and west sections of the perimeter area.
The fire destroyed a long line of cypress trees that had screened the pool complex from passers-by and also badly damaged the old metal fencing. Several openings were left in the perimeter, raising concerns about unauthorised access to the facilities.
To restore the area before the summer season gets underway, the council carried out a large-scale improvement project costing just over €66,000.
During the planning and construction stages, temporary measures were put in place to keep the area secure and reduce disruption. These included replacement fencing and tarpaulins to block visibility into the complex.The completed work involved removing the damaged fencing and clearing away vegetation destroyed by the fire before installing a brand new perimeter wall made from prefabricated concrete panels supported by metal pillars.
New cypress trees have also been planted along the wall, while the irrigation system has also been upgraded as part of the project.
The Councillor for Sports, María Herrero, highlighted that “this action allows us to fully recover the safety and image of the municipal summer swimming pools, also guaranteeing more modern and resistant facilities for users.”
