August 5 Free guided hike around the Castillitos gun batteries of Cabo Tiñoso
A fairly difficult route offers marvellous views of some of the hidden coves beneath the headland of Cabo Tiñoso
This testing hiking route covers a distance of some 7.3 kilometres around the spectacular gun emplacements on Cabo Tiñoso, known as Castillitos, as well as those of El Jorel and Atalayón, involving climbs totalling around 300 metres.
For many years, ever since the guns and barracks were officially taken out of service in 1994, this has been a popular destination for visitors and locals alike due to the stunning views, interesting architecture and fabulous great guns which make for wonderful photographs! The guns, forged in Sheffield, were installed between 1926 and 1933 as part of a sophisticated defence network which aimed to protect Cartagena and its important military arsenal.
The guns are within the municipality of Cartagena but this tour is offered by the tourist office of Mazarrón.
The evening hike on August 5 will necessitate sturdy climbing footwear, sun cream and plenty of drinking water, and will start at 18.30, lasting approximately 3 hours. The exact location will be released after booking. Anyone arriving in sandals will be turned away!
Registration is available online here or through the tourist office in Puerto de Mazarrón (telephone 968 594426, email oficinaturismomazarron@gmail.com). The registration period opens a week before the event and ends at 13.30 the day prior to it taking place.
The wearing of caps and sun cream is strongly recommended and participants should bring drinking water and wear appropriate footwear. Those registering must give ID details, and under no circumstances may people join without prior registration.
