August 16 An evening of wine, snacks and shooting stars in the Caravaca village of La Encarnación
Astronomy and fine local produce at the historic church and ruined Roman sanctuary of La Encarnación
The special summer events in Caravaca de la Cruz continue on Saturdays 9th and 16th August with a “Cata con Estrellas”, which combines astronomy with wine and cheese tasting during an evening under the stars.
At this time of year the main astonomical event is always the Perseid meteor shower, which can be seen as shooting stars in the skies of southern Spain and which is scheduled to reach its peak this year on 12th and 13th August, although they will be visible (atmospheric conditions permitting) from 27th July to 23rd August.
The venue for this event is the old church of La Encarnación, which stands on the site of old 1st-century Roman ruins, while wines are provided by Bodega de Julia Casado and the cheese is a selection of homemade products Ruperto. The stargazing is led by a group of experts from Starlight and the evening ends with photographs under the starry sky.
Both events begin at 21.00 and registration, which is available online here for 9th August and here for 16th August, costs 45 euros per person.
Further information about Caravaca is available from the tourist office (Plaza de España, 7, telephone 968 702424, email turismo@caravacadelacruz.es).
