August 1 and 2 The medieval religious play of the Auto de la Asunción in Jumilla
Jumilla continues to revive its medieval religious traditions with an adaptation of this 16th-century work
One of the traditions in Jumilla prior to the national fiesta of Assumption Day on August 15 is the performance of the medieval “Auto de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora”, which is being performed in 2025 in the parish church of Santiago Apóstol on August 1 and 2 at 21.30.
The play is being staged by the “El Losao de Santiago” cultural association and is a work from the 16th century adapted by Juan Miguel Valero Moreno and directed by Juan Simón Abellán. The musical director is María del Carmen Corredor Cano with original music by Pedro García Simón.
Tickets are on sale at 10 euros at the local Librería Papiros and online here, with discounts for under-25s booking online.
The Auto de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora had not been performed for over 300 years until it was revived after the pandemic by El Losao de Santiago in 2021, responding to the fact that a brotherhood in Jumilla has existed devoted to Our Lady of the Assumption since the 16th century. The drama is an enactment of the last days of the Virgin Mary, and like other “autos” in Spain is a religious work with its roots in the faith of the Middle Ages.
Similar pieces are performed in the Murcia localities of Aledo, Alhama de Murcia, Cehegín, Fuente Álamo, Librilla and the city of Murcia, having been revived after they were banned in the 18th century by Cardinal Belluga.
