April 11 to 12 Retro Windsurf competition in San Javier
Over 70 racers using boards which go back to the 70s and 80s at Camping Mar Menor near Santiago la Ribera
The regional one-design Windsurf Championship of Murcia is being held at the Camping Mar Menor campsite in San Javier (click for map) over the weekend of 11th and 12th April, when the area welcomes more than 70 competitors from all over Spain as well as an international group from Finland!
The event has something of a retro feel to it as the one-design class harks back to the early windsurf boards of the 1970s and 80s, and goes under the official name of the “Murcia Windsurfer International Weekend”, as Councillor Sergio Martínez explained at the presentation this week. Races will be held on a course between the Campsite, La Manga del Mar Menor and the coast in Santiago de la Ribera, with contests scheduled on Saturday from 11.00 to 13.00 and on Sunday from 11.00 onwards (although these timings may be modified according to wind and sea conditions).
As the Councillor said, competition will no doubt be intense but friendly, as the whole regatta is set up to be “50% competition and 50% fun”!
