April 30 Migas Night in Caravaca de la Cruz
Food, fun and a festive atmosphere as Caravaca begins its major local fiestas!
The Fiestas de la Vera Cruz in Caravaca, which include the renowned Running of the Wine Horses on 2nd May, stick to a fairly rigid schedule every year, and on the last night in April the main event is the holding of the “Noche de las Migas” in and around the Plaza de los Caballos.
This started as groups of friends gathering to eat traditional “migas”, a calorific combination of flour and olive oil served with meat or fish, prepared in an enormous frying pan over an open fire, and has now escalated to become a major event in the social life of the city. It’s a night of song and celebration as good local wine fortifies the population in preparation for the week ahead and a major migas-making competition, the Certamen de Migas del Sureste, takes place in the Plaza de los Caballos del Vino itself.
Needless to say, the atmosphere is a very convivial one as everyone prepares for the national and local holidays in the days ahead!
