April 17 La Celestina, a modernized version for all the family in San Javier
La Celestina Hilando Fino at the Winter Theatre in Parque Almansa
La Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea, better known as “La Celestina”, was published in 1499 and is attributed to a Jewish man in Toledo named Fernando de Rojas, is acknowledged to be one of the seminal works of Spanish literature, telling the story of a bachelor, Calisto, who uses the wiles of an old lady called Celestina to woo Melibea, an unmarried girl whose intimacy is closely guarded by her parents.
However, more than 500 years after its initial publication the original text is, unsurprisingly, dated, and this interpretation of the work by the Apócope Teatro & Arena Teatro y Danza companies is an effort to bring the story up to date and make it more accessible to a modern audience.
The same groups achieved success with their version of Don Juan Tenorio in 2021, and this production uses the same kind of humour and ingenuity to bring Rojas’ text alive for spectators of all ages.
The performance on 17th April at the Winter Theatre in Parque Almansa, in the centre of San Javier, begins at 21.00 with tickets priced at 10 euros and available online here as well as direct from Librería Gala.
