Andalucía sets aside €46 million to repair the damage from Granada's earthquake swarm
The Alhambra is among the beneficiaries, with more than €4 million allocated to stabilise some of its most historic structures
The seismic swarm that shook Granada province has now triggered one of the region's most significant emergency aid packages in recent memory. The Junta de Andalucía announced on Wednesday that the regional government will allocate €46.2 million to repair the damage caused by the earthquakes, after meeting with mayors of the affected municipalities.The swarm began in mid-August with a 4.8 magnitude quake followed by 98 aftershocks in a single night and by early September the series had passed 1,000 tremors in total. The cumulative impact has been considerable: more than 700 people evacuated, 1,188 building inspections carried out and over 5,700 calls made to the 112 emergency line, with more than 500 psychological support services also provided.
The largest single allocation, €15.5 million, will flow through the Andalusian Housing Plan to help homeowners' associations and individual property owners with repairs not covered by insurance or central government schemes. Twelve buildings and 150 homes in the Santa Adela neighbourhood are specifically targeted, with some to be replaced by new construction entirely.
Municipal infrastructure will receive €7 million, with applications already open following publication in the Official Gazette. Health centres are allocated more than €10 million, educational buildings €1 million, and social services facilities a further €330,000. Judicial infrastructure gets €160,000.
For many visitors to Granada, the most striking element of the package will be the €4 million earmarked for the Alhambra. The funds will go towards stabilising and consolidating structural elements including the Comares complex, the eastern wall of the Alcazaba, the Towers of Homage and Quebrada, and the roofs of the Hall of the Two Sisters.
Andalucia's president, Juanma Moreno confirmed that the regional emergency plan for seismic risk has been active since August 15, with the formal recovery phase beginning on September 8. He has also asked the central government to declare the area severely affected by a civil protection emergency, which would unlock additional national resources.
On the question of why he hadn't visited earlier, Moreno was unapologetic. "The presence of politicians in the early stages of a crisis does not provide solutions," he said, adding that he preferred to wait until he could present "concrete measures, damage assessments, and real budgetary resources" rather than simply turning up to "take a picture."
