Andalucía gears up for winter with snowploughs and thousands of tons of de-icing agents
Road maintenance campaign active until April 2026 to keep highways safe and open
As Andalucía braces for winter, the regional government has announced a comprehensive road maintenance campaign that will stay on alert until April 2026. Equipped with 37 snowploughs and over 3,700 tons of de-icing agents, maintenance centres tied to the State Highway Network are ready to guarantee safety and smooth travel across the region.In addition to road salt, the campaign includes 35 silos and ten reservoirs holding 241,000 litres of brine, essential for combating icy conditions on highways, motorways, and expressways. Two emergency parking zones have been set up on the A-4 highway for heavy goods vehicles: one near Bailén with space for 290 trucks and another in La Carolina accommodating 207 vehicles.
The government’s priorities are clear: prevent ice formation when frost is expected, inform drivers promptly of incidents, and remove snow swiftly to limit traffic disruption. Each section of the State Network has an assigned Level of Service focusing on high-traffic motorways and main routes connecting provincial capitals and towns over 20,000 residents.
This 24/7 operation is coordinated with the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and works closely with the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), regional authorities, and local councils to manage traffic safely during adverse weather.
Winter travel tips for safety and comfort
Drivers are urged to check road conditions before heading out, especially when travelling through mountainous areas and passes. Carrying snow chains, driving cautiously, and following any directions from emergency workers are essential precautions.
It’s also wise to prepare your vehicle by checking tyres, antifreeze levels, and brakes. Dressing warmly and keeping a charged mobile phone handy can make a big difference if stranded. Should you get stuck in the snow, stay inside the vehicle with the heater on, ventilate regularly to avoid fumes, and call for help instead of attempting to move alone.
This well-organised campaign aims to keep Andalucía’s roads safe and accessible through the winter months, helping residents and visitors alike travel with confidence and comfort.
