Águilas plants trees across town to improve public spaces and create jobs
The latest green drive across Águilas aims to improve daily life for residents while supporting local employment
A fresh wave of tree planting is underway in Águilas as the town council pushes ahead with plans to improve green spaces and make everyday life a bit more pleasant for residents.
One of the main projects is focused on the promenade running alongside the Rambla de las Culebras on Calle Almudena Grandes, where new white poplar trees are being planted to create a more attractive, shaded walkway. The idea is to offer relief from the sun while making the area more inviting for people out walking.
Planting is taking place right across Águilas, with around 100 trees added this week alone. Alongside white poplars, species such as Aleppo pine, tipuana, mulberry and bottlebrush are also being introduced in various locations.
Behind the scenes, there is another layer to the project. Much of the work is being carried out through an employment and training scheme aimed at people who are currently out of work. The programme, titled “New Life for the Old Municipal Landfill and its Surroundings, Phase III”, is backed by the Ministry of Labour and run through the regional employment service.Participants combine classroom learning with practical work on real projects, gaining hands-on experience in areas like landscaping and environmental restoration. At the same time, they are given an employment contract and financial support, helping them build skills and confidence as they look to re-enter the job market.
As part of the scheme, there is also a focus on introducing native plant species, which helps improve the local environment while restoring areas that have previously been neglected or degraded.
