November 29 Lorca lights up for Christmas
Lorca is gearing up for its brightest Christmas ever with record investment on festive lights
Lorca is pulling out all the stops for Christmas 2025, with the city council investing €211,000 in festive lighting across the municipality. That's an 11% increase on last year's budget and the extra money is going towards more decorative elements spread throughout both the city centre and the outlying districts.
The aim, according to the mayor, is to make sure the Christmas spirit reaches every corner of Lorca, not just the main tourist areas.
The centrepiece remains the enormous tree in Plaza de España, which stands 22 metres tall with a 10-square-metre base and features more than 40,000 LED lights. All the decorations were installed after the San Clemente festival and everything is ready to light up the city this Saturday evening, November 29.
What makes this year particularly interesting is the involvement of local employment and training programmes in creating new Christmas decorations for the outlying villages. Three new seven-metre-tall Christmas trees have been built specifically for Morata, Ramonete (Puntas de Calnegre) and the district of Parrilla. The project was completed in just one month by a team of 20 people, including 16 students and two instructors from the ‘Beta’ and ‘Omega 4’ mixed employment-training programmes, along with two municipal employees.
Each of these new trees incorporates 1,400 linear metres of white LED strip lights with flashing effects, which works out to about 17,500 bulbs per tree. The council invested €9,000 in materials for the project.
Rosa María Medina, Councillor for Local Development, highlighted the broader benefits of the initiative, explaining that it not only beautifies the streets but also gives students valuable hands-on experience and strengthens community spirit across Lorca at Christmas.These three additions bring the total number of illuminated Christmas trees across the municipality to 39.
When you add it all up, the lighting across Lorca now runs to approximately 410,000 bulbs and 20,500 metres of LED strip in total, of which 2,400 metres use RGB multicolour technology with the rest being white light. That's a noticeable jump from last year's figures of roughly 380,000 bulbs and 19,000 metres of strip lighting.
The official launch happens on Friday November 29 at 8pm in Plaza de España with a ceremony called "The Origin of Light".
The council has promised music, colour and plenty of surprises for families, with the evening designed to mark the official start of Christmas festivities in the city.
