If you speak enough Spanish then one of the best ways of starting to learn about the old city centre of Lorca is to book yourself in on one of the free tours offered on Tuesdays and Fridays at 17.00.
The visit lasts around 90 minutes and the only requirement is that a minimum group size of 34 people is reached, so if you take part in a group of four then even if only one of you speaks Spanish it will be possible to understand a good deal of information as you stroll through the streets of the third largest city in the Region of Murcia.
Starting at the La Merced visitors centre, the route includes stops in the Plaza de España, where the majestic former Collegiate Church of San Particio stands along with the Town Hall and the “Casas Capitulares”, and you’ll also get to see some of the magnificent pieces of embroidery which contribute to the light, colour and vibrancy of the famous Semana Santa processions in the city.
Finally, you’ll arrive at the Palacio de Guevara, a beautiful baroque stately home which has now been fully restored – you’ll want to go in and see some of the superb furniture inside!!
